Deep into the night the grave diggers do their work. It is a tradition to dig at night and to be together to honor the deceased. ‘With traditional drinks made by the grandmothers and bhang we chase away evil spirits’, says Zablon Obonyo Onjoro, gravedigger for more than nine years. ‘Also it makes our blood go faster and gives energy to dig and escort our brother to his grave. In our traditions women are not allowed to dig a grave. They are weak and get angry quickly.’ After the digging there is plenty of food and more traditional drinks.
